A Mentor’s Support – Spanish
A Texas mom requested a Spanish-speaking mentor shortly after learning she was pregnant with her first child. The father abandoned her, and she was depressed and anxious due to his leaving and an unstable housing situation. We matched her with a mentor who shared pre- and postnatal educational material with her each month. The mentor also provided relational support, guidance toward stabilizing her living situation, and assistance in completing employment applications. When the baby’s father changed his mind and asked to be a part of the baby’s life, the mentor helped the mom through difficult conversations regarding expectations, co-parenting, and boundaries. This mom also participated in One by One’s Christmas Blessing Day where she received gift cards, feminine hygiene products, and gifts for her and her baby to have under the Christmas tree. At this event, she learned of a church that partners with OBO and began attending services with her baby’s father. Shortly after the birth of her son, she and the baby’s father married. She continues to meet with her mentor, and they have decided to participate in our optional Year 2 program, which provides continued mentoring support until her son turns two.
